The Machinist
A movie starring Christian Bale (American Psycho), possibly the most extreme example of method acting I've ever seen. Bale has lost so much weight you likely won't recognize him even if you've seen him in other films. Normally weighing in at 170-180 pounds, the director claims he's starved himself to somewhere in the vicinity of 110 pounds, eating a can of tuna and nibbling on an apple per day until he is so thin you wonder how his body is still able to function.
Trevor (Bale) is a machinist who claims he has not slept in a year (physically impossible but simply experienced in momentary lapses of being unconscious in what may be misconstrued as being still conscious) His life only makes sense in a fragmented, detached sort of way, and maybe it doesn't really make sense at all to anyone who is remotely sane or well-rested. Is it repression? Is it insanity? Is it unexplainable? The movie leaves this viewer satisfactorily confused. A good, if not great, Noir-Thriller- Drama. And who is Ivan? "I just want to sleep." |
