Crash
Dark, tender, painful, hopeful...
Crash is a deeply emotional movie. In it's most basic form, it is a movie about racial prejudice and hatred, but the way this is presented is extremely powerful. Almost every character displays some form of racial prejudice, extending the gamut from mild to extreme. This is not a light film, and there are no overly simplified characters. No punches are pulled. Characters a shown at their ugliest, and at their best. The movie is a collage of individuals bumping into each other, usually in exchanges of racial bias or hatred, and followed by the reverberations in their and others' lives. The movie weaves backwards and forwards in time creating a powerful collage effect. Loose ends are not neatly wrapped up at the end of the movie. It is left as it was presented, the good and the bad simply existing. It is the world we live in. The movie is an expression of hope though. Coming face to face with the ugliness of their own prejudices, individuals change, not in a fairy tale, happy ending sort of way, but in a real life messy way. On the whole, this was an incredibly powerful movie, and well worth seeing. It was dark, and tender, and painful, and hopeful all at the same time. |
